That's the best description of Montessori I've probably ever heard. I mean, I haven't done extensive research, but having just finished choosing a preschool for my kid it was something I thought about. Ultimately, I'm wondering if we made the wrong decision in not choosing a Montessori school, but there's not room in my seven month pregnant brain for thoughts like that, so onward we go!

You did a great job ;-) Made me miss the classroom even more, though not the getting up and down. I do miss the hugs and the "eureka" moments of the children, of seeing them explode into reading that they didn't realize they pretty much taught themselves and seeing the world through their eyes! Now I look forward to sharing those moments with my grandchildren.

My twins went to a Montessori preschool for 2 years, and it was pretty much exactly like you describe. Child-led learning, without dumbing anything down: they learned about outer space and the world map at age 3, but in a way where it was attainable for them....

They LOVED making their own snack, washing their own snack dishes, and all the different "works". I loved how the place had a wonderful 1970's feel- all sunny and bright and worn wooden toys.

My youngest will start there in the fall. And I just have to put this here, because I know it will probably be VASTLY less that what anyone would pay in a city: we pay $100/month for 3 mornings/week of preschool. Can you even believe it????

I am going to need to read this post about four more times before I can digest it all. Thank you so much! We're already doing some of this stuff (low shelves so she can access her toys/books - even though she's not quite coordinated to access much yet), narrating, etc. And I'm definitely checking out that book and link - thanks for including resources!

Yes I remember all of this from Montessori! I remember "circle time" (what you call line time) where we would all sit on this giant taped circle on the floor and sing songs. Our teacher had a guitar and would accompany us. They'd use a song to explain how the earth rotated and traveled around the sun and frankly, that worked better than any science-class explanation. We all had library cards (!) and we'd walk to the public library once a week for story time and to return and check out new books. We all learned to sew and every year each kid would make a patch for a quilt that we'd then donate to a homeless shelter. I remember learning about biodegradable materials--they "planted" a banana peel, a piece of paper, and a piece of plastic, and we dug them up in 2 weeks to see what had happened and why. I vividly remember a station that would teach you to light a candle and then extinguish it safely with a snuffer. You had to be five years old to do that station and I remember that I couldn't WAIT until I was five so I could try it. I could go on and on but I'll stop now.

I didn't do Montessori, but it sounds like it would have been right up my alley as a kid.

Now I'm just sad I didn't go to your particular Montessori kindergarten, but mostly for the pony. (!)

My husband went to Montessori for 5 or 6 years. How come he doesn't clean up after himself? I want a refund.

Ummm..... this is really wrong but all I thought the ENTIRE time I was reading your post was that, as a mother of three, sometimes electroshock therapy really doesn't sound like such a bad idea! I know... WRONG!

This is great stuff. Montessori is really big here (hippies!), so I'm starting my official research here and now.

This is so inspiring! Very popular in Ireland too.

I hope you are feeling okay? And the walking muscles aren't too ouch-y..

Good luck! You'll be great.

Hello, I found you through Jonniker.

I went to a Montessori school for two years--preschool and kindergarten. I loved it, and your descriptions made me smile as I remembered that place. Yes, the memories are vivid, and very unlike other school memories which are not so vivid, although they happened more recently. That was an interesting point and something I hadn't considered.

Congratulations on the birth of your little one!
